NEWS RELEASE

JUDGE EMMETT AMONG GROUP HONORED
AS ‘PUBLIC OFFICIALS OF THE YEAR’

Two Elected Officials and Two Appointed Officials to be Recognized by UH Master of Public Administration Program at Luncheon

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett will be recognized as “Public Official of the Year” this morning at the University of Houston for his work on a variety of issues, including ethics reform, transportation and government efficiency.

The University of Houston’s Master of Public Administration program selected Emmett and three others as recipients of the program’s sixth annual awards. The awards luncheon honors “distinguished public servants in the Houston metropolitan area,” according to the school.

Emmett will be joined by co-recipients Mayor Tom Ramsey of Spring Valley Village, Richmond City Manager Terri Vela and Tina Paez, the City of Houston’s director of administration and regulatory affairs.

James Thurmond, the director of UH’s MPA program, said: “These winners exhibit qualities consistent with those of the MPA Program – trust, accountability, performance, ethical decision-making, and crossing jurisdictional boundaries to solve problems. We are honored to have them as our winners, with each being recognized as a Public Official of the Year at the luncheon.”

“Public service is extremely rewarding on many levels,” said Emmett. “And, while it’s humbling to be the recipient of prestigious awards like this, it’s even more rewarding to know that the county is being recognized for the major strides it’s made in recent years on a large number of important issues that affect millions of residents every day.”

“Judge Emmett has consistently worked to propose, and also accomplish, good public policy on a variety of complex issues including county ethics reform, transportation and mobility, and eliminating duplication and redundancy of services between various jurisdictions and levels of government to meet the needs and demands of an ever-changing Harris County populace,” according to the school’s news release.

The Sixth Annual Public Officials of the Year Luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton University of Houston, in the Waldorf-Astoria Ballroom.
